Population within 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 km of Spain’s provincial capitals
7.42 million people live within 50 km (31 miles) of central Madrid, and 63,500 within 50 km of Teruel. We counted the people living within 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 km of Spain’s 50 provincial capitals, Ceuta and Melilla, using the official municipal register and the same code as our Population in a radius tool, and you can download every figure.

Ready-to-quote facts
- Madrid has the most people around it of any Spanish capital from 5 km out: 1.52 million within 5 km, 3.34 million within 10 km and 7.42 million within 50 km. Barcelona follows, with 2.59 million within 10 km and 5.60 million within 50 km.
- Teruel is the capital with the fewest people nearby: 36,200 within 10 km and 63,500 within 50 km. The median capital has 193,000 within 10 km and 682,000 within 50 km.
- 85% of the people within 50 km of Ceuta live in Morocco (Tangier and Tétouan), and 88% of those within 50 km of Melilla; just 5 km from Melilla, 51,100 people already live in Morocco.
- 3.63 million people live within 50 km of Guadalajara, because the circle reaches Madrid; only 4% of them live within 10 km of the city.
- Burgos (79%), Zaragoza (76%) and Salamanca (73%) are the most concentrated capitals: that share of the people within 50 km live within 10 km.

Municipality: register population of the capital’s municipality as of January 1, 2025. People at each distance: each municipality’s register population, spread with the GHS-POP grid where the circle cuts it, plus the GHS-POP grid outside Spain. 52 capitals.
Method
Which capitals, and which point
Spain’s 50 provincial capitals, plus Ceuta and Melilla. Each circle is centered on the point that the IGN’s national gazetteer of municipalities and settlements (NGMEP) uses for the city, usually in the old town. It’s the same point as on our place pages.
How people are counted
With the same data and the same code as our Population in a radius tool: every row in the table opens it with these rings, and an automated test checks that it gives the same figures. Each municipality adds its population from the official municipal register as of January 1, 2025: in full if it’s inside the circle (using IGN boundaries) and, if the circle cuts it, the share of its people living inside according to the GHS-POP grid, which shows where homes are in 1 km cells. Each municipality’s total is still the INE figure.
Across the border (Portugal, France, Andorra, Gibraltar and Morocco), population comes from the GHS-POP 2025 grid. 10 of the 52 capitals have people from another country within 50 km.
The low and high figures
Every figure comes with a range, the same as in the tool: municipalities entirely inside count in full, and what’s counted from those the circle cuts gets plus or minus the error that holds in 8 out of 10 circles checked against the 2021 census (60% for 1 km, 11% for 10 km and 6% for 50 km). For the median capital, the range spans 13% of the estimate at 10 km, and 120% at 1 km.
That’s why the order at 1 km is only a rough guide: Valencia (79,800), Madrid (76,500) and Bilbao (72,700) are within each other’s range.
What these figures don’t tell you
The circles are straight lines, not road distance: to see how many people live within a 20-minute drive, use the drive time map. The sea doesn’t count, only land, so coastal capitals have fewer people nearby. The register counts registered residents, not commuters or holidaymakers.

Frequently asked questions
How many people live within 50 km of Madrid?
About 7.42 million, measured from the gazetteer point in the city center. About 3.34 million live within 10 km, and 1.52 million within 5 km.
Which capital has the most people within 1 km?
Valencia, with about 79,800 people, ahead of Madrid (76,500) and Bilbao (72,700). But with such a small circle the range is wide and all three are within each other’s: at that distance, the order is only a rough guide.
Why does Guadalajara have so many people within 50 km?
Because a 50 km circle reaches Madrid and its suburbs: 3.63 million people, even though only 4% of them live within 10 km of the city.
Does it count people in Portugal, France or Morocco?
Yes, with the GHS-POP grid. It matters most in Ceuta (85% of the people within 50 km are in Morocco) and Melilla (88%), and also in San Sebastián, with 261,000 people in France within 50 km. The CSV lists the population outside Spain separately.
Can I get these figures for another place or other radii?
Yes: in Population in a radius, choose “Rings” and set any center and radii (1-5-10 km, 1-3-5 miles or your own). It gives the population of each ring and the cumulative total, with a range, and you can download it as CSV.
