Australian postcodes in a radius

Pick a point in Australia and a radius to get the postcodes inside, with their suburbs, population and area on the map, in a list you can open in Excel.

From the UK, Canada, Australia, Spain or the US: the center moves to that code’s point.

Which postcodes count

Counts the ones whose interior point (a point that always falls inside the area) is within the radius. The distance is to that point.

How to use it

Search for a place, type a postcode in “Center on a postal code” (2000), use your location or tap the map to set the center, then choose the radius. You can also drag the edge of the circle. The list is sorted from nearest to farthest; tap a postcode to see it on the map.

Choose which postcodes count: those whose center is within the radius, or every one the circle touches, even a little, with the share of each inside. “Copy the codes” gives you the list with commas or one per line, and Download CSV adds the suburbs, the state, the population, the area, the distance and the coordinates.

5 km around Sydney Town Hall

Within 5 km (3.1 miles) of Sydney Town Hall, in Sydney, there are 28 postcodes with their center inside, or 41 counting every one the circle touches. The ones with their center inside have 378,393 people. The closest are 2000 (Sydney), 2007 (Ultimo) and 2010 (Surry Hills).

Postcodes and Postal Areas

Australia Post doesn’t publish postcode boundaries. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) approximates them with Postal Areas, built from the census mesh blocks in each postcode, so their edges follow real streets and lots. They cover the postcodes where people live or work; PO box-only and large-user postcodes (like many of Sydney’s 1xxx codes) have no area and aren’t listed.

There are 2,641 postcodes with an area and 25,369,823 people in the 2021 Census. The first digit gives the state: 2 New South Wales (and the ACT), 3 Victoria, 4 Queensland, 5 South Australia, 6 Western Australia, 7 Tasmania and 08 the Northern Territory. The most populated is 3029 (Tarneit), with 129,888; the largest, 0872 (Hugh), at 989,086 km².

Where the data comes from

The areas are the ABS 2021 Postal Areas (ASGS Edition 3), simplified (about 60 meters of detail in cities, coarser in the countryside), and population is the 2021 Census count by postcode (table G01). Each postcode’s suburbs are the ABS Suburbs and Localities with people inside it, from most to fewest, using census counts by mesh block. It’s all ABS data under CC BY 4.0, which allows any use with attribution.

Each postcode’s point is an interior point, which always falls inside its area. The list shows the census suburbs rather than Australia Post’s own locality names for each postcode; they nearly always match.

What it’s for

Setting a delivery or service area, planning a letterbox drop or an ad campaign by postcode, splitting territory between sales reps, or finding out how many people live in the postcodes you cover.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my postcode missing?

If it’s a PO box-only or large-user postcode, it has no area in the ABS Postal Areas. It may also be new: the data is from the 2021 Census.

Which postcodes count?

With “Center inside”, those whose interior point is within the radius. With “Any part inside”, every one the circle touches, with the percentage of its area inside.

Is the population the number of people inside the circle?

No: it adds up the whole postcodes in the list. An outback postcode can be huge and lie mostly outside. For the people living inside the circle, use Population in a radius.

How recent is the data?

It’s from the 2021 Census: the ABS Postal Areas and their population. The ABS updates them with each census.

Is the distance a straight line?

Yes, from the center of the circle to each postcode’s interior point, on the WGS84 ellipsoid.

What about other countries?

The same tool exists for the United States (ZIP codes), the UK, Spain and Canada; the links are at the end of the page.
