What’s within a radius

What’s within a radius of each city

185 cities with four circles each: how many people live inside, which towns fall inside and just outside, which counties, provinces or regions they reach, and how far a 30-minute drive gets you. The 100 largest US cities are in miles, like the UK ones; Spain’s 50 provincial capitals, Ceuta, Melilla and the rest, in km.

United States

The 100 most populous cities, by state. The figure: people within 50 miles.

Spain

The 50 provincial capitals, Ceuta and Melilla, by autonomous community. The figure: people within 50 km.

Rest of the world

33 big cities in 17 countries, only where GeoNames covers the surrounding towns well. The figure: people within 50 km (or miles in the UK).

How it’s calculated

The people in each circle come from Population in a radius, with the same data: Spain’s municipal register (spread within each municipality with the GHS-POP grid), the population of each Census ZIP code area in the US, and the 2025 GHS-POP grid elsewhere. Each figure comes with its low and high estimate.

Towns are the municipalities of the register (by their main town), Census places (cities, towns and CDPs, by their center) and, outside both countries, GeoNames places of 1,000+ people. Distances are straight-line on the WGS84 ellipsoid. The 30-minute drive area comes from OpenStreetMap’s Valhalla, without traffic.
