Population within 1, 3, 5, 10, 25 and 50 miles of the 100 largest US cities

19.5 million people live within 50 miles of downtown New York, more than around any other US city. We counted the people living within 1, 3, 5, 10, 25 and 50 miles of the 100 largest cities, with the same data and the same code as our Population in a radius tool, and you can download every figure.

Population: Census estimate for July 1, 2025 (Honolulu: ACS 2020–2024). People at each distance: ACS 2020–2024 by ZCTA and, outside the US, the GHS-POP 2025 grid. 100 cities.

Method

Which cities, and which point

The 100 most populous incorporated places in the Census Bureau’s population estimates for July 1, 2025, plus Honolulu: Hawaii has no incorporated cities, so we use the Urban Honolulu census-designated place and its 2020–2024 ACS figure.

Each circle is centered on the point the U.S. Geological Survey uses for the city in its official gazetteer, the GNIS, which is usually downtown. It’s the same point as on our place pages.

How people are counted

With the same data and the same code as our Population in a radius tool: every row in the table opens it with these rings, and an automated test checks that it gives the same figures. Inside the US, population is the American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimate for each Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA). Each ZCTA is treated as a circle of its land area around its interior point, and adds its population in proportion to the share of that circle that falls inside.

Across the border, in Canada and Mexico, population comes from the GHS-POP 2025 grid of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, with 1 km cells.

The low and high figures

Every figure comes with a range, the same as in the tool. In the US, the low figure counts only ZIP areas entirely inside the circle and the high one counts in full every ZIP area the circle touches; outside the US, the grid’s margin for that radius. From 10 miles up the range is narrow (for the median city, 55% of the estimate from low to high); at 1 and 3 miles it’s very wide (377% at 1 mile), because a city ZIP area is often as big as the circle itself.

What these figures don’t tell you

The circles are straight lines, not road distance: to see how many people live within a 20-minute drive, use the drive time map. Water doesn’t count, only land, so coastal cities have fewer people nearby. ACS population is for 2020–2024, while the list of cities comes from 2025 estimates.

At 1 mile, treat the order as a rough guide: the figure depends a lot on where each ZIP area’s interior point falls, and another center (city hall, the train station) can change it quite a bit. The order at 10, 25 and 50 miles is much firmer.

Frequently asked questions

How many people live within 50 miles of New York?

About 19.5 million, measured from the USGS point by City Hall. About 7.11 million live within 10 miles, and about 134,000 within 1 mile.

Which city has the most people within 1 mile?

New York, with about 134,000 people, followed by San Francisco (91,100). At that distance the figures are rough: check their range in the table.

Why do Jersey City and Newark rank so high?

Because they’re just a few miles from Manhattan, so their 10-mile circle takes in a big part of New York City. 5.92 million people live within 10 miles of Jersey City, more than around Los Angeles.

Why do fewer people live within 10 miles of some cities than in the city itself?

Because the city is bigger than the circle. That’s the case for 26 of the 100, led by Jacksonville and Houston, whose city limits reach far beyond 10 miles from downtown.

Can I get these figures for another place or other radii?

Yes: in Population in a radius, choose “Rings” and set any center and radii (1-3-5 miles, 1-5-10 km or your own). It gives the population of each ring and the cumulative total, with a range, and you can download it as CSV.
