The 52 areas on the map
In the numbered version, each province gets a number in alphabetical order, from 1 (A Coruña) to 52 (Zaragoza). Ceuta and Melilla are numbered too, although they are autonomous cities rather than provinces. Spanish names are used, as on Spanish maps. Here’s the key:

Facts for the classroom
The largest province is Badajoz, at 21,752 km² (8,398 sq mi), and the smallest is Gipuzkoa, at 1,979 km²: Badajoz is 11 times bigger. Spain is divided into 17 autonomous communities (regions); Castilla y León has the most provinces (9), followed by Andalucía (8), while 7 regions have just one.
In 8 provinces the capital has a different name from the province: Álava (Vitoria-Gasteiz), Asturias (Oviedo), Baleares (Palma), Bizkaia (Bilbao), Cantabria (Santander), Gipuzkoa (San Sebastián), La Rioja (Logroño), and Navarra (Pamplona). The capitals version marks each one with a dot and its name.

All blank mapsFrequently asked questions
Can I use it in class?
Yes, it’s free. Print it, copy it and hand it out as many times as you like. If you post it on a blog or a class website, credit “All Map Tools · data IGN (CC BY 4.0)”.
How do I print it on US Letter paper?
Choose Letter in “Paper size” and click “Download PDF”. In the print window, pick Letter paper and 100% scale (“Actual size”). For a bigger map, choose Tabloid (11 × 17 in) or A3.
What order are the numbers in?
Alphabetical, from 1 to the last one. That makes the key easy to follow when you grade, and it’s the same key the worksheet’s answer page uses.
Why are the Canary Islands in a box?
The islands lie in the Atlantic, far southwest of mainland Spain. Drawing them in place would make the map much bigger and everything else smaller, so Spanish maps show them in an inset. If you don’t need them, choose “Leave out”.
How many provinces does Spain have?
50. The map has 52 numbers because Ceuta and Melilla are shown too, although they are autonomous cities, not provinces.
