South Korea on the map

South Korea is divided into 8 provinces, 5 metropolitan cities, Seoul, Sejong and Jeonnam-Gwangju, 16 in all, covering about 98,400 km² (38,000 sq mi) as measured on the map. The largest is North Gyeongsang (18,500 km² (7,140 sq mi)) and the smallest, Sejong (465 km² (180 sq mi)): North Gyeongsang is about 40 times bigger.

The capital is Seoul. The capitals version marks the capital of each province.

What each province borders

North Chungcheong borders the most provinces: 7 (Daejeon, Gyeonggi, Gangwon, South Chungcheong, North Jeolla, North Gyeongsang, and Sejong). Jeju borders no other province: it is an island or archipelago.

South Korea borders North Korea. 2 provinces border North Korea: Gangwon and Gyeonggi.

11 provinces have a coastline and 5 don’t: Daegu, Daejeon, North Chungcheong, Sejong, and Seoul.

Number key

Numbers follow alphabetical order, from 1 (Busan) to 16 (Ulsan). Sejong is too small for a number on A4 but keeps its number in the table. Areas are measured on the map and approximate; “Borders” counts neighboring provinces.
